Charles Edward "Charlie" Lannin was the son of Nathaniel Lannin (1791-1858) and Mary Ann Abbott Lannin (1801-1860). Both Nathaniel and Mary Ann were born in Schull, Cork County, Ireland, and emigrated to Quebec, Canada, around 1821-.
Mary Ann Abbot's brother, Charles Frederick Abbott, also born in Ireland, married Nathaniel's sister, Mary Lannin, and settled in Quebec near the Lannin family.
Nathaniel and Mary Lannin had 13 known children, all born in Canada:

It is believed that Thomas, Joseph, and George were triplets.

Charles Edward Lannin was born in Sainte-Martine, Quebec. He married Mary Ann Stevenson (from England) around 1859. In Canada's 1851 and 1861 census', respectively, the family lived in Beauharnois, Quebec, and Enniskillen, Lambton, Ontario.

In 1869, the family emigrated to Michigan. In 1888, Charles filed a Declaration of Intention stating that he would pursue citizenship in the United States. His actual naturalization record has not been found.
