Note: Marriage reg'n says he was born in Montreal: age 38, banker, son of James Burns and Margaret Lawson Wilkie. 1871 census Gavin is living with his parents in Montreal and is a clerk. From 1881 to 1901 he is in Victoria, BC. All census ages exceept 1901 are consistent with being born in 1852. However, 1901 census says he was born in Scotland in 1855 and arrived in Canada in 1880? Something was out of whack there! Can't find him in 1911?

Note: The people listed in this record as children of "Cork Brangans" were not all sisters and brothers. Those who are listed as Brangham are included. Their parents are unknown. However, they include those listed in Bandon Parish registers, in various records at the website Bandon-Genealogy or in other websites such as FamilySearch.org. Ballymodan includes the portion of the town of Bandon and surrounding area that is south of the Bandon River. It is presumed that these Haggertys were all related and this artificial "father" was created solely to connect the Bandon Haggertys to one another. There were also Haggertys in neighbouring parts of Cork. See my database at:

In cases where only a marriage date is known, the birthdate was estimated from the marriage date--for women approximately 20 to 25 years earlier; for men 25 to 30 years. On 18 January 1857 Henry had served five years as apprentice and mate in the British Merchant Service; Henry was appointed First Mate 13 January 1851 and Master 18 February 1852. Some of the papers give a birth date of 11 July 1829; others say 10 Jun 1829. He was a resident of Passage West in 1850 to 1852, and was born in Clonakilty.

CAPTAIN HENRY HEAGERTY / ELDEST SON OF THE ABOVE / WHO DIED ON BOARD / THE SHIP BOWDON / OFF CORK HARBOUR / 1ST AUGUST 1892 / AGED 63 YEARS.
Probate Record: "Heagerty Henry of the ship "Bowden" of Liverpool master mariner died 1 August 1892 at sea Administration at London 24 October to Annabella Catherine Heagerty widow Effects £250. A document concerning deaths at sea posted through Find My Past indicates Henry died of stomach cancer.
Note: Annabella Catherine Browne; Indexed as Middletown, probably should be Middleton. MLB shows this marriage as in Diocese of Cloyne.
