Thomas Mason Pretious

M, #15801, b. about 1809, d. about 1881

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1809; Hull, Yorkshire, England
  • Christening: 18 August 1808; Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire
  • Marriage: 6 December 1835; Louisa Emberick; Saint Mary Le Bow, London, England
  • Marriage: 1845; Jane Osborn; London, Middlesex county, England
  • Death: About 1881; Brighton, Sussex, England
  • Note: The IGI shows Thomas Mason christened 18 SEP 1808, Saint Mary's, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, son of William and Ann "Pretius."
Thomas was a "Hatter." In 1851 he lived in "Grove, Woolmer 28 Cottage," Hammersmith, Middlesex county. In 1861 he was living in Kensington. I cannot find either Thomas or Jane in the 1871 census. In 1881 Thomas was 72, a widower living alone in Brighton. He was listed as a "Gentleman." His death was registered in Brighton in the 4th quarter of 1881, age 73.

Thomas Pretious

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1837; London, Middlesex county, England
  • Marriage: 28 March 1863; Anne Mitchell; St John's on Chapman Road, England
  • Death: About 1881; Fulham, Greater London, Middlesex county
  • Note: Thomas was living with Thomas and Jane Pretious in Hammersmith in 1851. He was the only child listed in the household at that time. Like his father, Thomas Jr. was a Hatter. I have not found him in the 1861 census. In 1871 he and Anne were living in St. James parish, Westminster, with their six eldest children. Death registered 3rd quarter 1881, age 44, but Anne was listed as a widow in the 1881 census, so apparently died before the date on which the census was enumerated.

Thomas Meredith

M, #15824, b. before 1820

Biography

  • Birth: Before 1820
  • Death: Canada
  • Note: Reference is made to a Tom Meredith in reminiscences of a Mrs. Maria Knapp, who died in 1927 at the age of 101:
With the death of Mrs. Maria Gertrude Knapp, 101, the oldest resident of this city, Tuesday night, the last person to remember the Battle of the Windmill in the Patriot war of 1838 passed away. . . "For several days everyone expected that Prescott would be attacked, as there were rumors that a force from the United States was assembling, and sentries were stationed around all the streets. Mr. Buckley called to the nearest sentry and he blew his horn. In a minute bugle calls were heard in all parts of the village and the town was in an uproar. This caused the boats to pull away from the wharf and they floated down the river.
"There were no regular soldiers in Prescott, but every property owner was a member of the militia and they were quartered in every available place. My father was sent on a ship to Kingston to bring the regulars back to Prescott. My father was in command of the ship.
"I was much frightened during the battle as I did not know what might happen to my father. I remember there was a tall clock standing in the room and I was small enough so that I could hide in it. We would, of course, hear the firing very plainly and we did not know what might happen. If the rebels won they would have been in possession of the town.
"There were two spies who lived in Prescott, Tom Meredith and a man named Dinsdale. They acted as guides to the invaders but when the fighting got hot and it looked as though the rebels were beaten, they made a raft out of some fence rails and paddled across the river, probably going to Ogdensburg. That was the last ever seen of them in Prescott, although both were property owners there."

Hiram E. Barnhart

M, #15825, b. about 1816, d. 10 August 1894

Biography

  • Birth: About 1816; Upper Canada
  • Death: 10 August 1894; Roxborough tp, Stormont, Ontario
  • Note: Hiram is listed among the 1891/92 survivors of the war of 1837/38 . At that time he was said to be living in Moose Creek, Stormont county. In 1851 he was 28, born in Canada, and farming in Osnabrook, Stormont county, with his wife and two daughters. In the 1891 census he is listed in Roxborough, Cornwall & Stormont, age 75, born USA, with his wife and daughter "Margrett." His probably death registration (#) says he was 87, born Cornwall, a laborer and painter and died of dropsy. The informant was Mrs. C. Montgomery of Roxborough tp.
This family has me confused--they don't appear to be listed in the Barnhart Genealogy I have, but the names convince me that this is the same Barnhart family. Where do they fit?

Family: Catherine (b. about 1830)
