John Dolmage

M, #15183, b. about 1802, d. 1883

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1802; Ireland
  • Death: 1883; Ontario
  • Burial: Everton Cem., Eramosa tp, Wellington county, Ontario
  • Note: John and Sarah emigrated to Canada in the early 1830s, settling in Eramosa tp, Wellington county, as did several other families from Queens County, Ireland. Many of these families were related. In January 1882 John wrote a lengthy letter to his cousin Sarah Turpin who lived in Ireland, asking many questions about the family. He also provided some information on related families who had moved to Canada. At that time he said he was in his 80th year and had two young daughters, 5 and 8, by his second wife. He was also a great grandfather--two of his daughters by his first wife were married and had grown children at the time. Both John and Sarah were buried in Everton Cem, Eramosa tp.
    From
"Occasionally however, there is a stone with a name no longer heard in Eramosa. Such a name is DOLMAGE. The column that stands on the Dolmage plot has three names. JOHN DOLMAGE, SARAH ANSTON [sic] DOLMAGE his wife and their daughter, ALECIA..
"Under Sarah Dolmage's name is one of the longest epitaphs of any of the stones. It is: 'who after a self-sacrificing devotion to the cause of Christ and her family, with great Christian fortitude and calm resignation, met the King of...'. The last word is unreadable. Mrs. Dolmage died May 18, 1867. Following this is the familiar lines: 'O death where is thy victory, O grave where is thy sting.' Only they are slightly misquoted.
"Record...the epitaph is not surprising for in an early church record book, recently found by Alvin Root, Charles Harris and Roy Leslie are the names of the Dolmages who were trying to form a congregation. Their group went by the name "Dolmages". Today, no one seems to know for certain, just where this family lived, but it was near Rockwood and it is the "Circuit Register of Member's Names" beginning in 1858.
"There are eleven names and all belonged to three families; The Dolmages, McKeowns and a Henry Mathews. There was a John Dolmage Senior. Evidently their group didn't grow for on January 11, 1860 all the Dolmages, McKeowns and Henry Mathews are on the Rockwood Village list. Class No 1 that later became the Methodist congregation."
In the 1871 census there is a John Dolmage who is a stray, Methodist, living in Guelph, age 68; also John Dulmage, 62, farmer, Anglican, Maryborough tp, Wellington county. This man could be the former. In the 1851 census John and Sarah are listed as "Dalmadge." They were living in Eramosa with their 3 children: the name of the eldest is listed as Hesters, rather than Alicia? the others are Roseanne and Celena: all children born Canada.

Elizabeth Phillips

F, #15186, b. about 1857, d. 28 March 1939

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1857; Belfast, Ireland
  • Death: 28 March 1939; Athy, County Kildare
  • Note: In 1901 Elizabeth was said to be 44 years old. By the 1911 census Elizabeth, age then said to be 47, had married George Meredith who was several years her junior. When she married Elizabeth was a resident of Ballinamoney, Castledermot, daughter of William Henry Phillips, Gentleman. She was said to be many years older than George and his family did not approve of the marriage. I was told by George's niece that his mother had cried all day the day of the marriage.
Obituary in The Irish Times, 30 March 1939, p. 1: "MEREDITH - March 28, 1939, at 52 Duke street, Athy, Co. Kildare, Elizabeth Meredith, formerly widow of the late Robert(?) Drimmie, Killeen, Birr. 'At rest for evermore.' Funeral private. American papers please copy." Death registration 2nd qtr, Athy district, age 81.
  • Note: Robert Drimmie; Familysearch has marriage registration of Robert Drimmie and Elizabeth Phillips 2nd quarter 1882, Dublin North.

Robert Drimmie

M, #15187, b. about 1856, d. 16 July 1905

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1856; County Kildare, Ireland
  • Death: 16 July 1905; Birr district, Ireland
  • Note: Website with info on Drimmie family has Robert born 1860: .
From a letter in possession of an Ivan Drimmie of Saskatchewan and posted at:

"I am the only one of the family at home here now. My Brother Robert the Land Steward to Lord Ross at Birr Castle, Kings County; he is married and has two children my sister Bessie is staying with cousins at present.
and trusting this will find you all quite well
    I am your Affect Brother
Geo.Drimmie" [The fact that Robert had 2 children indicates the letter was written abt 1886]
The 1901 census shows Robert 44, Elizabeth 44, Robert 18, Eleanor 16, Henry 14, Martin 10 and Millicent 7, living in Riverstown, Killeen, County Tipperary. Robert Sr. was a "Farm Steward." Eleanor married in 1904, husband unknown. Only Millicent appears to be listed in the 1911 census--the three surviving sons all emigrated to Canada. No further information on the daughters.
The only Irish death registration listed on Familysearch for a Robert Drimmie was 3rd qtr, 1905, Birr registration district, age 49. That is relatively consistent with the census date. I think it likely this is the correct information and that the 1860 birth date was an estimate.
To clarify the apparent discrepancies in locations for this family. Killeen in a townland in Tipperary and is in the Parsonstown registration district. However, it is also only about 2 km from Birr, a town in County Offaly (formerly Kings county), the location of Birr Castle, home of the Parsons family. Thus these various records would all refer to the same location.
