Clarence William Haggerty
M, #1126, b. 14 March 1887, d. 5 November 1960
Parents
Biography
- Death: 5 November 1960; Montana
- Note: Some records show him as William Clarence, including his WW I Attestation papers completed Nov. 1917: there he gives his birth year as 1888, born London, ON, resident of Vulcan, SK., father Tom a resident of Chinook AB. Description: 5' 5 1/2"; black hair, grey eyes, dark complexion.
1920 US census indicates he entered the USA in 1919; border crossing records show he arrived in Sweet Grass, Montana 10 January 1919. At that time he gave his birth place as Chatham, Ontario and his last place of residence was Vulcan, Sask. He also indicated that his father then lived in Chinook, Alberta. 1940 census shows Clarence Haggerty, 53, born Canada, occupation carpenter, living in Cutbank, Montana. His highest level of education was grade 4! His wife Anna was 55, born Ohio. Neither seems to be showing in earlier censuses.

Joseph John Haggerty
M, #1128, b. 15 June 1897, d. after 1974
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 15 June 1897; Chatham Twp, Ontario
- Note: The following is Joe's personal account (1974, pp. 229-230):
I was born in 1897 in Chatham, Ontario, and moved to Saskatchwan in 1904 with my parents. In 1910, I moved to Alberta and took up a homestead in the Chinook district. The first few years were tough times, so I bored water wells and blacksmithed for my neighbors.
My wife, Minerva, was also born in Ontario, and later moved west to Saskatchewan, where we first met. We were married in 1921 and lived on the homestead at Chinook where our three children, Elmer, Irene and Lorne, were born.
In 1926, I came up to the Clyde Lester farm in the Keoma district to build crop barging equipment. I liked the district so, in 1937, abandoned the homestead at Chinook and moved the family to Keoma to the Torsell farm which is still in the family. Our three chldren attended the Keoma and Kathryn schools.
In 1945, we moved to Balzac where we farmed until we retired to Calgary in 1964.

The Commonwealth War Graves website lists him as a flight sergeant in the 138 Squadron of the RCAF, and buried in Runnymede.

From the Regina Leader Post, copied from a clipping--date not given:
"CHASED HESS INTO SCOTLAND: The dramatic flight of Rudolph Hess, No. 2 Nazi, from Germany to Scotland is now one of the strange episodes of the war. Only revealed within recent days by officials is the fact that a Regina airman, a member of the R.A.F. was the pilot of the night fighter which chased Hess across Scotland, on the night he fled from Germany. The pilot was F/O W. A. Cuddie (above), son of Mrs. Walter Jones, Grenfell apartments, Regina. Cuddie went to Britain in 1939 to join the R.A.F. He was trained for flying as a member of the old No. 120 Bomber Squadron of the auxiliary active air force in Regina."

Letter from Nettie Tanner Davidson and Mamie [Mary Jane] Tanner Sweet,
East Selkirk, Manitoba, 6 December 1942
Dear Cousins,
Your card received stating that you had received the photo.
Mothers parents were first cousins both Haggertys [Mary and James] but she did not seem to know much about her father's family--only she has told us about when he [Jonathan] settled he had only his axe and one dollar and how he built a shanty and had to work out for some cash to help.
but she told us about her mothers' family--they lived just near them, and how granfather used to be away and granmother had Aunt Sara a tiny baby. her father [William] lived with Uncle Wm. Haggerty his son, and he used to walk over to see her nearly every day. he had a little dog which he loved very much. went everywhere he did. The wolves used to roam around her shanty at night, and all she had was a quilt hanged for a door. she was a very good shot and had a rifle to. she used to want her father to stay at nights with her but no he had to go home to his own bed. She used to tell him she was not afraid when she had the rifle and of course he laughed at her thinking she could shoot to kill. one day this little dog was out in the edge of the bush quite a distance from the shanty and granmother said, I can shoot your dog if you say so. he laughed and said I am willing for my dog is safe. you can never shoot to kill. you cant shoot straight. but she did fire and killed this dog. he was buried in the cemetary at Belleville also a son George. When Granmother died the cemetry was full so she was buried in her brothers grave. I have been to the old Cemetry and saw their graves. St. Thos. Anglican Church. Bellville, is the Church. I think Granmother was the only girl in that family. and Uncle Wm. and Uncle John your husband's granfather and Geo. who died young I think he left a wife [Elizabeth Morgan] and one girl [actually there were three children, James, Elizabeth and Catherine]. she married again [John S. Bateman]. and moved to the States. this girl [Catherine] married over there to a Mr Howe and Mother had her daughters photo. I think the mother did corrospond with Mother at one time.
Now Granfather Haggerty had one sister and she married Nat Lannin. she was named Mary Ann. I think Mother got her name for her. her granson is on the Police Force, or was. maybe is yet. and his address is Chief W. J. Lannin, Sarnia, Ont. That is about all I can remeber about Mothers people. but I do know there were other Haggerty cousins of Mother near where we lived. There was one Jas. Haggerty who Mother used to speak of. The Old Head. and I know of two others Marmaduke and Adam Haggerty brothers. Marm. family I knew quite well. And my greatgranmother on dadie's side was Aunt Mollie Haggerty she married a Tanner and lived when she died with her son Edward Tanner. dadies father. she was blind for a time before she died.
This Jas. "Old Head", had one son James who was a Member for North Hastings one time not so very long ago. he had one sister Bess who married Nicholas Stout. These last ones I knew real well and we always visited each other. There may of been more children in this family. if I could talke to you with what you have gathered together, we might be able to trace more away back. My thoughts were always with these old descendants, and I'll be so glad if you can get it all together.
This has been a lovely winter here so far we are hoping it continues--there is a little snow. I have had two weeks holidays and enjoyed the rest. Nellie and Bob had ten days around Nov. 1st. [these last two sentences lead me to conclude it was Mamie who actually wrote this letter] Christmas is drawing nearer every day, but it really does not seem like Christmas any more, we miss the old days when were all home. I am glad Jane is well, what a long life 86 yrs. I saw her when she was in Ont. last time. You will be very busy now in the holiday time. "Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards men". that old message, when will it ring true again? It did go Peace on Earth to Men of good will. I wonder if the men of good will, will bring the Peace again?
Hoping this will find you all well and may Christmas bring to you all that Peace that is the blessing of ths Christmas season. Write sometime.
Yours sincerely,
Nettie Davidson

Ontario registration records date as 1883 and witnesses Christopher and Agnes Webb. I have checked the Ontario image and it is definitely 1883. I suspect the transcriber misread the date in the church records.

- Burial: Bethel Cem., Hastings County, Ontario
- Note: Lizzie was descended from the Kilmeen Haggerties in several ways: Lizzie was descended from the Kilmeen Haggerties in several ways: On her father's side her great grandfather was James Haggertie. Her mother, Mary Webb, was a grand-daughter of James Haggerty, son of Jonathan Haggertie, and Mary Haggerty, daughter of William Haggertie. Her maternal grandmother, Sarah Haggerty, was a grand-daughter of Jonathan on her father's side, and of William Haggertie on her mother's side. And if that doesn't thoroughly confuse you, it sure confuses me!
An Elizabeth who was a servant in the John Morgan household in 1901 (Rawdon, Div. 5, p. 10, family 92) is probably this child, suggesting she was enumerated twice. A Sarah E. was living with her widowed mother and younger siblings, Blanche and Adam, in Huntingdon tp in 1901. In both cases the birth date was the same.
