Daniel Hagarty
M, #10703, d. 25 October 1909
Parents
Biography
- Christening: 22 February 1818; Ballymodan Parish, County Cork, Ireland
- Marriage: Before 1850; Sarah; Canada West
- Death: 25 October 1909; Toronto, Ontario, Canada
- Note: I think there's a good chance this is the Daniel "Hogerty", died Toronto, Ontario, 25 October 1909, age 91, birth date given as 21 Feb. 1818 is a good fit for 22 Feb. 1818 baptism. In 1861 Daniel Haggarty and his family lived in Brantford, Canada West, where he was a carpenter. The famly's religion was Plymouth Brethern.
Death reg'n #5176: cause of death senility and cardiac failure; residence 51 Howlands Ave. Daniel's father is said to have been named George--if this is the Daniel I think it is, then that is an error, but he did have a brother George. Informant was E.W. Hagarty of 662 Euclid Ave. Census records show Daniel immigrated in 1842 and was born 21 or 22 February 1818, Ireland. Earlier records show him as a carpenter; later he is said to be a builder/contractor. Census records spell the name Haggarty or Hagarty.

George Haggerty

Parents
Biography
- Christening: 6 October 1820; Ballymodan Parish, County Cork, Ireland
- Marriage: 8 July 1851; Tamar Brangan; Kilbrogan Parish, Bandon, County Cork
- Burial: 22 February 1894; Ballymodan Parish, Bandon, County Cork
- Note: George was a shopkeeper, living on Cavendish Quay, Bandon, when he married. The Griffiths Valuation also shows him on Cavendish Quay. At the time of his death he was living on Castle Road in Bandon. Birth registration for son William (1865) indicates George was a baker living on Castle Road. He also served as the Ballymodan parish clerk for several years. Bandon Directories for 1867, 1870, 1886 and 1893 all show George Hegarty, baker, Castle Road. The 1881 Directory shows George Hagerty, baker and grocer, of South Main Street--note, in 1867 (but not 1870) there was a John Hegarty, 81 South Main Street, Draper & Haberdasher--probably a relative? In 1893 George Hagerty was also listed as the "Master" of the Poor Law Union.

Edward Haggerty
M, #10707, b. about 1805, d. before 1901
Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1805; County Cork, Ireland
- Marriage: 13 October 1842; Ellen Lannin; Abbeystrewry parish, County Cork, Ireland
- Note: We have no documentation as to Edward's parents. His marriage record indicates he was from Smorane, a townland on the edge of Skibbereen, County Cork. In 1832 the only Hegarty listed as holding land in Smorane for the Tithes Applotments was a William, who may have been Edward's father? or brother? The fact that his eldest son was named James would seem to favour that as his father's name. There was a James Hagarty in Coolnagarane in the 1835 Tithes record.
Edward and Ellen appear to have moved around a bit. The earliest record I have for them is the Abbeystrewry (Skibbereen) Church of Ireland (Anglican) parish register which records their marriage and indicates both resided in Smorane, a townland in Creagh parish located about 1 km from the centre of Skibbereen. Edward signed the marriage register with an "X". Ellen wrote her own name. In 1843 when their daughter Catherine was baptised in Abbeystrewry they were said to be living in Bridgetown and Edward's occupation was "Carman."
The next five children were also baptised in Abbeystrewry parish from 1844 to 1858. Edward's occupation varied from time to time: 1846 again carman; 1848 labourer; 1850 shoemaker; 1856 labourer; 1858 labourer. The remaining known children were baptised in Bandon from 1861 to 1866. Edward's occupation was not noted.
The 1832 Tithes Applotments show an Edward Hegarty/Hagarty holding land in both Clancoole (4 acres) and East Gully (3 acres), Ballymodan parish (Bandon). In the 1853 Griffiths Valuation shows two listings for Edward Hegarty in Abbeystrowry civil parish: a house in block 4 in Coolnagarrane; and in Gortnacloghy, 76 High Street, Skibbereen, next to a James Hegarty--both shown with house, land and small garden. There are also Edwards in the townland of Pembroke, Marmullane parish (just outside of Cork city, approximately Passage West), Edward Hegarty is listed as the immediate lessor of block 50 and Ellen Hegarty as the immediate lessor of block 51. Both blocks showed other occupants of the house and land. Neither Edward nor Ellen was an occupant. Other Griffiths listings for Edward were as an occupant of a house in Coolnagarrane, Abbeystrowry, Cork and in the town of Skibbereen. These listings are most likely to be this Edward. I think the others are, as well, but it's not clear. There were protestant Hegartys in Marmullane at that time, so they may be related. Those Hegartys appear to have come from Clonakilty.
The Bandon Poor Law Union Valuations, 28th August, 1844 show an Edward Hegarty in Clancoolmore.
The Bandon Catholic church records show an Ed Hagarty was a witness to marriages in February 1833 and June 1843. All of these records do seem to suggest we could have two or more different Edwards, yet surely it's not likely that there would be 2 Edwards both married to Ellens? Edward was not a popular name among the Hegartys.
Death registrations for possible Edwards: none in Bandon that fit; 1871 Skibbereen district, age 65 is possible.
Perhaps he was the Edward Daniel who was a son of Daniel Hagarty and Tamasin Brangham, baptised Ballymodan 1811 (see separate entry). However, it is possible that we have different Edwards?
- Note: Ellen Lannin; MLB Diocese of Cork and Ross. Edward and Ellen married "with the consent of Nathaniel Lannin" who must have been either Ellen's father or a brother. Both Edward and Ellen were residents of Smorane in Creagh parish when they married. The register noted that their license had been transferred from Creagh parish to Abbeystrewry.

Ellen Lannin
F, #10708, b. about 1825
Parents
Biography
- Birth: About 1825; Ireland
- Marriage: 13 October 1842; Edward Haggerty; Abbeystrewry parish, County Cork, Ireland
- Note: The marriage record indicates that Ellen was from Smorane, just outside the town of Skibbereen.
There was an Ellen Hegarty whose death was registered in Bandon district, 1874, age 65. Alternatively, in both 1901 and 1911 there was a widowed C of I Ellen Haggarty living in Blackrock with her single daughter Susanna/Susan. In 1901 they were 74 and 42 and both seamstresses. In 1911 they were 86 and 50; Ellen was an Irish lace maker, Susan a seamstress. I think it likely that these women were Ellen Lannin and her daugther Susanna. If so, I am unable to find a possible death record for Ellen.
- Note: Edward Haggerty; MLB Diocese of Cork and Ross.

Adam Haggarty
M, #10710, b. 10 November 1866, d. 9 November 1935
Parents
Biography
- Birth: 10 November 1866; Bandon, County Cork
- Christening: 16 November 1866; Ballymodan Parish, County Cork, Ireland
- Death: 9 November 1935; Vancouver, BC Canada
- Burial: 13 November 1935; Mountain View Cemetery
- Note: Coast Guard record for Adam Haggarty, born Bandon, 10 November 1866: joined Coast Guard 10 November 1884, at which time he would have been 18. He was 5' 5 3/4" tall, had red hair, blue eyes and a "fresh" complexion. He apparently was still growing at that time, as he is later said to be 5' 8" tall. Adam served on many different vessels during the next 10 years. Character was evidently assessed at the end of each year. Until 1892 his character was said to be good or most often, very good. However, in 1892 he was said to be of "fair" character and in 1893 "indifferent." In 1893 he was sentenced to 90 days in "gaol," apparently served in New Westminster (Canada). The record ends 10 November 1894, where it says "Shore Esquimalt C/S Expired." Esquimalt is located on the Canadian west coast, near Victoria, on Vancouver Island.
In 1901 Adam "Hargerty" was a lodger in the household of Edward Carroll in Burrard, Vancouver. He was employed as a stevedore and indicated he had emigrated to Canada in 1890.
In 1911 he and his family were in Vancouver: Adam, Martha, her two eldest children by a previous marriage and their son Adam Edward, lived at 523 Burrard or Bernard. Adam was said to be a Foreman for the "V.V.Y.C." 1903 birth registration for son Adam gives 867 Prior St. as their address; Adam's occupation is again said to be Stevedore.
- Note: Martha Maude Bush; BC marriage reg'n #1902-09-048868; bride's parents were Thomas and Lena Crane (her mother having remarried?)
