Mulligans

• Note: This is a hypothetical person. The children listed for this unknown Mr. Mulligan may or may not all be siblings, but they were probably related. Ages are unknown for most of these Mulligans, so the sequence in which they are listed is arbitrary. The Mulligans originally settled in Fitzroy Township of Carleton County, near the current capital city of Canada, Ottawa (originally called Bytown). Michael Mulligan

• Marriage: 26 September 1831; Bridget Slavin; Notre Dame Cathedral, Ottawa, Upper Canada (Ontario)

• Death: 8 September 1874; Bromley tp, Renfrew County, Ontario

• Note: In the 1851 census, the children of Michael and Bridget are all said to have been born in Ireland--this cannot possibly be correct. The only other Mulligan in the township was also a Michael, age 21, single, labourer, who may have been an eldest son of this family. The family lived in a log house.
  Michael had first farmed Lot 6, Third Concession in Fitzroy, Carleton county (McCuaig, 1996) and then Lot 19, Third Concession in Bromley, Renfrew county. Michael (Mick) was also a teacher. Judy Mulligan was named as the godmother of Michael's son John in 1833. I believe that would have been the Julia who married Edward Reilly, and suggests Julia Reilly may have been the sister of Michael Mulligan.
  Ontario death reg'n #6971 gives birth place as Cavan; cause of death appears to be ulceration of stomach; informant, his daughter Julia Hart.

Bernard (Barney) Mulligan

• Birth: About 1802; Ireland

• Marriage: Mary Roddy; Upper Canada

• Note: Bernard farmed Lot 10, Third Concession Fitzroy Township, Carleton County (McCuaig, 1996).
  Must be the "Barney Muligan" who lived in a "log shanty" in Logan tp, Perth county in January 1852, age 50; wife Mary 40, Michael 22, Barney 17, James 15, Margaret 19; children all born Canada; also in the household was Margaret "Reddey" born Ireland, age 42, probably sister of wife Mary. Other families listed on the same census page lived in log houses, so this was probably a very primitive dwelling. Barney was farming 100 acres, Lot 32, 4th Concession, all of which were "Under wood or wild," suggesting they had arrived there very recently.

Bridget Slavin

• Marriage: 26 September 1831; Michael Mulligan; Notre Dame Cathedral, Ottawa, Upper Canada (Ontario)

• Death: 14 February 1894; Osceola, Renfrew County, Ontario

• Note: Age 44 in 1852. Also in 1852 census I found there was a Slavin family next to the family of Barney Mulligan (who later moved to Bromley) in Perth county. Perhaps Bridget's family?
  Surrogate Court record indicates that Bridget was the widow of Michael Mulligan, that she owned the West 1/2 of Lot 18 of the 2nd Concession and the East 1/2 of Lot 19 of the 3rd Concession in Bromley Twp, Renfrew County. Her heirs were her daughters Bridget Mulligan and Catherine Mulligan. The executors of her estate were John Mulligan, yeoman of Bromley and Patrick Hart, merchant of Osceola. Her will was dated 12 May 1883.

  An 1881 census record for Bridget Mulligan of Bromley must be this Bridget, although there is a discrepancy in the ages of the three children living with her at that time: Bridget is said to be 27, Catherine 26 and Michael 25 (Bromley, Div. 1, p.23).

• Note: Age 14 in 1852. Baptism sponsors: Thomas O'Neill & Judith Kieley. According to the 1871 Census, Bernard farmed 100 acres, Lots 18 and 19, Second Concession Bromley Township. These lots are also listed as the farm of Michael Mulligan. Bernard was no longer living in the same household as his father in 1871. In the 1881 census he is listed next to the listing for his widowed mother.
  Ontario death reg'n #25714: age 72, married, birth place has been written over, but appears to be Osceola; cause of death not stated, but parents named, informant Guss Mulligan.
