His obituary appeared in the Times of India:
‘The fact has already been mentioned that Lieutenant A. Meredyth Young, was the first officer of the Indian Army Reserve, to be killed in action during the present war. In this connection, says the Civil and Military Gazette, we may quote a notification recently issued by Mr. J. F. Connolly, I.C.S., Commissioner, Northern India Salt Revenue:—'The Commissioner announces with deep regret the death of Mr. A. Meredyth Young, Superintendent, Northern India Salt Revenue Department, who was killed in action on the 3rd March 1915, when serving with the Indian Expeditionary Force in the Persian Gulf, as Lieutenant, Indian Army Reserve of Officers, attached to the 16th Cavalry. True to the military traditions of his family, Mr. Young volunteered at once for active service on the outbreak of war, and was the first officer of the Indian Army Reserve of Officers to give his life for his country. By his death the State has been deprived of an able and fearless officer whose loss will be mourned by all ranks of the Department." The circumstances of Mr. Young's death were in keeping with the record for gallantry he had won in civil employ. Less than two months before he was called up for military service he had been awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind Medal of the 1st class for a fine exploit he performed in February of last year while serving as Superintendent of the Northern India Salt Revenue Department at Bahadur Khel, in the North-West Frontier Province. On that occasion he rendered notable assistance to the authorities in holding up and capturing a gang of notorious outlaws who were crossing the frontier on their way back to their homes after raiding in British territory. While deeply regretting his untimely loss, Mr. Young's brother officers in the Salt Department may well feel proud of the manner in which he uphold the reputation of their service.’.³ Albert Meredyth YOUNG was baptised on 7 February 1877 in Agra, Bengal, India.¹
