4 Theophilus Meredith entered Westminster School, London, England, in January 1744 aged 13. He was aged 16 when he entered Oxford University, England, on 2 June 1747. He matriculated at Christchurch College but subsequently migrated to St Edmund's Hall. He was living at St Margaret Parish, Westminster in 1758, when he acted as Trustee in the separation of his sister from Lawrence Lord Ferrers. He graduated B.A. in 1761 and M.A. in 1762. He was ordained by Bishop John Hume on 6 June 1762 at Christchurch, Oxford, England, as a priest.
He was Vicar of St Mary's Church, Whitegate, Cheshire between 1761 and 1769. He was appointed Vicar of Linton, Herefordshire in 1769, and Rector of Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, and Prebend of Cublington, Madley Parish, Herefordshire on 27 September 1771. The lucrative benefice of Ross-on-Wye was bestowed on him by Lord North, in gratitude for an incident on 27 March 1771 when he was rescued from a large mob by Theophilus's brother Sir William Meredith. On 30 July 1774 Theophilus delivered an address at Hereford Cathedral to the Grand Jury of the Assizes of Hereford, which was subsequently printed.
