Frank Jocelyn Heagarty

M, #20173, b. 19 March 1877

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 19 March 1877; Surrey, Southwark, England
  • Christening: 31 December 1892; St Jude, Peckham, Surrey
  • Marriage: About 1910; Emily
  • Note: Age 4 in 1881; February 1, 1866, Frank was admitted to Peckham Park School, Southwark, age 8. His previous school was St Ann Poole's Park. He left Peckham October 3, 1890.
24 in 1901 when he was living with his parents, occupation shirt cutter. Not found in England in 1911, but I think the following, living on Hopefield Avenue, Belfast, Ireland, must be him: Frank Jocelyn Heagarty, 34, born England, occupation "Gent's outfitter"; wife Emma 33, also born England. They had been married less than a year. Frank appears on electoral registers in Wandsworth, England in 1914 and 1915. (No women listed on those registers--did they not have the vote in 1914/15? Outrageous!)

William Henry Heagarty

M, #20174, b. 26 September 1878

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: 26 September 1878; Surrey, Southwark, England
  • Christening: 31 December 1892; St Jude, Peckham, Surrey
  • Note: Age 2 in 1881, 12 in 1891; not living with his parents in 1901 and not found in UK records after 1891. But I may have a lead? CWGC shows the death of Corporal Frederick Charles William Heagarty, son of William Henry and Ethel Annie Heagarty, of Mosman, New South Wales, Australia, 23 January 1943, age 31. Corp. Heagarty served with the Australian Army Provost Corps and was buried in Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery, Papua New Guinea.
In 1901 a "Mr. Heagarty", unmarried, was among the "Ladies and Gentlemen" who sailed from London to Sydney on the Britannia, departing 2 October. Perhaps this is when he first went to Australia?
William H. Heagarty married Ethel A. Carne in 1908 in Mosman, NSW. The 1943 directory for Mosman shows Ethel, Wm and Frederick all living at 76 Ourimbah, Mosman. Wm was a cleaner, and Frederick a shirt cutter, supporting suggestion that these folks were from this family. Ethel died three months after her son was killed, on 28 April1943. In 1949 we find Wm Henry, shirtcutter, living at 46 Glover St, Mosman.
In 1913 a Wm Henry Heagarty was a draper, living on Granville St. in Brisbane. Also in that home was Lily (his then wife?). Patricia Helene and Robert Irwin Heagarty (engineman) lived on Reid St in Brisbane. I think this must be a different family as there is also a record of W H Haegarty in Mosman in 1912.
February 22 1954 William Henry Heagarty, age 75, retired, sailed from London to Sydney, Australia on the Arcadia. His last residence in England was 7, Ridgeway, Hayes, Kent. This record indicates that Wm was a permanent resident of England, so maybe the Mosman man is a different man, but I'm doubtful. I suspect he may have returned to England after the death of his wife and son?
