- Note: Annie Pake was named as Susan Armstrong's mother when her birth was registered in 1932, confirmed by her father Joshua Armstrong. I could not find a birth registration for Mary Armstrong, but the marriage registration for Mary Isobel Armstrong identified Annie Maria Pake as her mother and Joshua Armstrong as her father. It appears that Annie/Maria Anne and Joshua never married--the two daughters were living with their father in 1891. I can find no trace of Maria Anne Pake after that time--no census, no marriage, no death registration.
In 1891 there was a Harley Pake age 37 living with his wife and children in Chatham, who seemed a possible brother of "Annie"? Searching earlier censuses revealed that to be the case, and allowed me to fill in details of the Pake family. In 1851 she was listed as Maria, age 10; in 1871 she was "Marah" age 21; in 1881 she was still living with her mother and sisters in Belleville, Ontario, listed as Maria Anne age 30. I suspect she came to the Chatham area to live with her brother--I suspect she was hired to care for the Armstrong children after their mother's death and was "taken advantage of" by Joshua.
