Jonathan David Clarke

M, #15621, b. about 1770, d. 29 March 1846

Parents

Biography

  • Birth: About 1770; Ireland
  • Marriage: 12 October 1797; Elizabeth Thomas; St Peter's Church, Dublin, Ireland
  • Death: 29 March 1846; Dublin, Ireland
  • Note: Jonathan David Clarke, son of David Clarke, esq., later solicitor and Recorder of Portarlington, Queen's county, was enrolled to Trinity College, Dublin Nov 1786, age 16. In 1791 Jonathan David was admitted to Lincoln's Inn (i.e., to the bar) in 1791, at which time it was noted he was a gentleman and son of David Clarke, esq. of "Anguier" street, Dublin. The IGI shows a Jonathan David Clarke married Elizabeth Thomas 12 October 1797, St. Peter's Church, Dublin. Although we have no proof that this is the same man, it seems likely, and I have entered these records as such.
In 1824 we find Jonathan David, eldest son of John David Clarke of Dublin, admitted to Gray's Inn (another form of being admitted to the bar in England)--is this a son of the man who entered TCD in 1786?.
: In 1831/32, both Jonathan and Rev. Richard Clarke were listed as Commissioners of the Peace for Queen's county, appointed by the Lord Chancellor. In 1837 Jonathan was named in the Lewis Topographical Dictionary as a resident of Labergerie, a "remarkable seat" in the vicinity of Portarlington.
Wilson's Dublin Directory 1799: Barristers - Clarke, Jn Dav, M 1793*, 68 Ann Street. (* called to bar Michaelmas term 1793)

"Gentlemen and Citizens Almanack compiled by Samuel Watson, Bookseller", 1784: Portarlington Magistrates: Jonat. Clarke efq.; Sov. Jas Osbourne; John Geoghan, Gt Portrines; Jonath. Clarke efq. (note 2 Jonathan Clarkes); Commisioner for taking Affidavits, Queens County: Jonathan Clarke.
    Found at :
    29 May 1821:
Letter from Jonathan David Clarke, 1 Merrion Square South, Dublin, land agent to John Dawson, 2nd earl of Portarlington, to William Saurin, Attorney General of Ireland, emphasing that several baronies in King's County [County Offaly] are not disturbed, and therefore should not be included in the proclamation.
Death notice in the Leinster Express, 4 April 1846, p. 2:
"At his residence in Dublin, on the 29th ult., Jonathan David Clarke, Esq., Q.C., of Merrion-square and La Bergerie, Portarlington, aged 75 years, for many years father of the Home bar (?)."
