He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba in 1943 and served as a Major in the Medical Corps of the Canadian Army during World War II. On September 26, 1944, he married Kathleen Shirley Cruickshank in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After the war, he studied Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of London under Sir Russell Brock; in Stockholm under Professor Clarence Crafoord and at the University of Michigan under Professors John Alexander and Cameron Haight. Mac was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, England and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He practiced Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in Toledo, Ohio, from 1951 through 1983. In addition to his clinical and surgical practice, his dedication to medicine is reflected by his work, Heart and Coronary Arteries, An Anatom ical Atlas for Clinical Diagnosis, Radiological Investigation, and Surgical Treatment. This Atlas was published in 1975 and received recognition throughout the world, including a Gold Medal at the International Book Festival in Leipzig, Germany. Its 1,098 photographs and illustrations, and the accompanying text, took years to produce and create. One reviewer describes the Atlas as "a landmark in the study and presentation of the heart and coronary arteries. . . . [A]n original work that may be equalled, but will be difficult to surpass." Another review observes that "This book is no ordinary atlas: it is a work of art." In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mac pursued his passionate interest in culture, and he never tired of traveling the world with Shirley to further his study of music, art and history. Mac died in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida on January 28, 2005.
