Sir Joshua Colles MEREDYTH was born on 1 June 1771.4 He and Maria NUGENT were married in September 1795.5 He and Doligny EDWARDS were married on 3 February 1822 in Etchingham, Sussex, England.6 He died on 27 July 1850, at age 79, in St James's Terrace, Dover, England.7,8
Joshua Colles Meredyth assumed the title of 8th Baronet of Greenhills on the death of his father in 1813. The family’s claim to the baronetcy was disallowed in 1904, having become extinct on the death of the 1st Baronet, William Meredith in 1664, who had no male heirs.

According to his obituary, Joshua Colles Meredyth was knighted May 16, 1794, by the Earl of Westmoreland, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, being at that time a Captain in the 89th Foot. He also received the order of Military Merit from Louis XVIII, and that of Louis of Hesse, from the Grand Duke of Hesse; and he was a knight grand cross of St. John of Jerusalem. The Illustrated London News described him as follows”
" This excellent and worthy Baronet was one of the last survivors of the race of old-fashioned courtly gentlemen, now nearly extinct; and he delighted to recall the anecdotes of his earlier years, which, told with a grace and humour peculiarly his own, rendered his society in the highest degree entertaining."
He was recorded as living at Kilcullen, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland in 1786 and at 14 Norfolk Crescent, Bath, England in 1841.9,10,11,12 Sir Joshua Colles MEREDYTH was born in 1770.5

Charles Burton Newham MEREDYTH1,2

FatherBarry Colles MEREDYTH (b. about 1749, d. 14 October 1813)

Biography

Charles Burton Newham MEREDYTH was born about 1777.3 He and -?- were married. He and Moriah (Maria) JARVIS were married on 1 October 1822 in S Mary's, Lambeth, London, England, - witnesses Robert Jarvis and Frances Mary Jarvis.2 He died on 4 August 1858, at age ~81, in Gardiner St, Dublin, Ireland.4
Charles Burton Meredyth was a a Major in the Royal Marines. He married his second wife Moriah when he was aged about 42 and she was about 17. His children were born in London, but it appears that the 3 boys were brought up in Ireland, to where Charles returned, while Moriah stayed in London with their daughter Juliet.

There appears to be some uncertainty regarding the nature of the relationship between Charles Burton Meredyth and his second wife Moriah Jarvis, and her relationship with her second husband Joseph Dunning. The facts, in chronological order, appear to be as follows:

(1) Charles married Moriah in 1822 with the consent of her father when she was a minor. He is described as Charles Burton Newham Meredyth, a Bachelor, on the certificate, although Moriah is described as his second wife in some much later newspaper reports. They were married in Lambeth, and were living in Pimlico at the time of the baptism of their first child Juliet Almira in 1827, her father being described as Charles Newman Meredyth, a Major in the Army, and mother as Maria Meredyth There appears to be no London record of the baptism of their next child, Alexander Barry, ca. 1828, but Elbert [sic] Charles was baptised in Parish of St Mary, Osterley, Middlesex in 1830, his father being described as Charles Burton Newman Meredyth, a Major in the Army, and mother as Moriah Meredyth. Their youngest child was baptised as George Augustus Jarvis at St. Dunstan Stepney in 1832, his father being described as Charles Burton Newnham Meredyth of Mile End Old Town, a Major in the Royal Marines, and mother Moriah Meredyth.

(2) There seems to be no record of Charles Burton Meredyth or of his 3 sons in the 1841 England & Wales census; they may have returned to Ireland, and indeed his son George Augustus Jarvis recalled much later that he went to school in Ireland. However Charles’s wife Moriah was recorded in the census at St. John’s Street, Westminster, and described as Maria Meredith aged 25, along with her daughter Juliet Meredith aged 13. Note that ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in this census. Juliet’s age is consistent with her baptism record, while Moriah’s indicates a year of birth between 1812 and 1816, consistent with her marriage as a minor in 1822.

(3) In 1837 Juliet Almira Meredyth was recorded as marrying Alexander Cowie at St. John the Evangelist, Lambeth, London. Her father was described on the certificate as Charles Meredyth, Major in the Army.

(4) There seems to be no record of Charles Burton Meredyth or of his 3 sons in any of the England censuses. However, Moriah was enumerated in the 1851 census in Lambeth, London, and described as Maria Dunning, aged 36, wife of Joseph Dunning. Juliet Cowie was in the same household and her relationship to the head of household Joseph Dunning was described Wife’s daughter.

(5) Several newspapers record the death in 1858 in Dublin of Major Charles Burton Meredyth, late of Athy, brother of Sir Edward Newenham Meredyth, Bart. In the 1861 census Moriah was enumerated in the same house as Joseph Dunning in Barkham Terrace, Southwark, but this time he was described as a lodger, and she as Maria Meredith, aged 47, officer’s widow pensioned. Her grandsons George and Burton Cowie were enumerated in the same household.

(6) A Hobart newspaper announced the marriage of Joseph Dunning to Moriah in 1863, describing her as the widow of Major Meredyth, brother of Sir Edward Meredyth Bart. They were enumerated in the 1871 census at Barkham Terrace, Southwark, and she was described as Maria Dunning aged 56.

(7) The ages recorded for Moriah in the various censuses are consistent, and point to a marriage to Charles Burton Meredyth when she was aged about 17 and he was about aged 45. It seems that she was estranged from her Charles and living with her future second husband from at least 1851, and probably earlier.
