Biography

Arms of Richard Meredith, Bishop of Leighlin
Richard MEREDITH, Bishop of Leighlin, was born about 1550.2 He and Sarah BATHO were married before 1584.1 He died on 3 August 1597, at age ~47.1,4 He was buried on 7 August 1597 in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.5
Richard Meredith entered Oxford University in 1568. He graduated BA on 4 March 1573 at Jesus College, Oxford, England, and graduated MA on 1 June 1575 from the same college.

He appears to have entered the Church as a member of St. David's Cathedral Clergy the same year he entered Oxford University, as he is recorded as a Prebendary at Clydey, Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1568. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the Bishop of St. David's was Richard Davies, his father's 1st cousin. The Bishop may have played a part in Richard Meredith's upbringing following his father's death in 1557, when Richard was about 7 years old. Subsequently, he is recorded as having had the following appointments:
     ~ Rector (with cure of souls) in 1573 at Rhoscrowther, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary in 1574 at Brecon, Powys, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary in 1575 at Lledrod, Brecon, Powys, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary, Brecon collegiate church and rector, Barton in Pembrokeshire in 1578.
     ~ Rector (with cure of souls) in 1578 at Burton, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
     ~ Vicar in 1579 at Llanafan Fawr, Brecknockshire, Wales.
     ~ Prebendary in 1580 at Carrog, Denbighshire, Wales.
     ~ Sinecure Rector in 1580 at Angle, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
     ~ Cursal Prebendary in 1580 at St. David's, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

He was appointed Chaplain to the lord deputy of Ireland, Sir John Perrot in 1584, and moved to Dublin where he was appointed Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in June 1584 that year. He was described in July 1588 as being noted for 'diligent preaching' and keeping 'a good house to the relief of many people which likeness was not done this 30 years by his predecessors' in July 1588. He was appointed Bishop of Leighlin in April 1589. He appeared before the Star Chamber in May 1592 and was fined £2000. He was described as being in poor health and 'not like to live' in 1593. He appeared before Dublin court of castle chamber in January 1593/94, and was fined £20 with a sentence of eight days in prison. He left a will dated 28 July 1597; £100 to Dublin corporation; allowance to poor; £800 due to estate from Archbishop Loftus and sons & bequeathed to his daughters provided they remained chaste until marriage, estate in Pembrokeshire to youngest son. He died on 3 August 1597. He was buried on 7 August 1597 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland. His will was proven in 1606 at St Asaph's Consistory Court.

Sarah BATHO1

Biography

Sarah BATHO was born before 1567. She and Richard MEREDITH, Bishop of Leighlin, were married before 1584.1 She and Sir Adam LOFTUS were married in 1597. She died on 1 August 1650 in Middleham, Yorkshire, England.2
Sarah Batho’s brother became the steward to her first husband Richard Meredith. The Patent Rolls of James I (20th regnal year, 31 July) describe a grant to Robert Meredith of Dublin of the wardship of Luke Bath, son and heir of Robert Bath of Lea, Queen’s County, deceased. The Robert Meredith mentioned was presumably Sarah Batho’s son, and so Robert Bath and his son Luke are likely to have been related to her brother, the steward to Bishop Richard Meredith.
William Weston accused Sarah's 2nd husband Adam Loftus of having taken bribes during the years 1620 to 1623, when Weston said he gave Lady Loftus, among other things, “one suit of hangings of the value of £160, one dozen of silver plates with his lordship's arms thereupon [and] 32 ells [of] Polonie rich taffetie”.3

Biography

Sir Adam LOFTUS was born about 1568. He and Sarah BATHO were married in 1597. He died in 1643, at age ~75, in Middleham, Yorkshire, England. He was buried in Coverham church, Yorkshire, England.
Sir Adam Loftus was 1st Viscount Loftus of Ely, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, nephew to Adam Loftus Archbishop of Dublin. He lost considerable property, in excess of £10,000 in value, as a result of the Irish rising of October 1641. Soon afterwards h emoved to Yorkshire, where he died at Middleham early in 1643. He was buried later that year at Coverham church. His widow died seven years later.

Biography

Sir Robert MEREDITH was born after 1576.4 He and Anne USSHER were married in 1618. He died on 17 October 1668. He was buried on 19 October 1668 in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.5,6
Sir Robert Meredith was knighted at Dublin on 6 Sep 1635 by Lord Wentworth, Lord Deputy of Ireland. He entered Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland in 1609 as a Fellow Commoner, and Lincoln's Inn on 3 Jul 1611.
He held the following posts and appointments:

Biography

Sir Thomas MEREDITH was born after 1576.4 He and Letitia FORTESCUE were married. He died about 1677.
Sir Thomas Meredith was knighted in Ireland on 15 Jul 1630 by Viscount Loftus and the Earl of Cork, Lords Justices of Ireland. He was admitted to Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland as a Fellow Commoner in 1609, and to Lincoln's Inn on 14 Jul 1628. He was a Member of Parliament for Old Leighlin, Co. Carlow, Ireland in 1634. On 5 May 1645 he presented a petition to Irish House of Commons.
He owned property at Dromormona, Co. Tipperary, Ireland in 1634 and in Co. Mayo, Ireland before 1659. In 1635 Dean Benjamine Culme demised to Sir Thomas Meredith, Chancellor of the Exchequer [sic], for £50 per annum, the Lordship and Manor of Kilberry, Bert, Clony, Shrowlan, Kilcolman, Oldcourt, Tullaghgory, Preswellstown, Shanrahin, Tyrrelstown, Clonwanwyer, and Russelstown.
He was recorded as living at Shop St and Deere St Ward, Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland in 1664, and at Mooretown, Co. Kildare, Ireland, in 1634.
His will was dated 28 Dec 1676.

An incident in March 1643 is described by Clodagh Tait in "Death, Burial and Commemoration in Ireland, 1550-1650" in which: ‘Sir Thomas Meredith smashed the tomb of a Mr. Eustace at Castlemartin in County Kildare. His ensign, Edward Roe,later deposed that he did this because ?Mr. Eustace of Castlemartin had burnt the house of Sir Robert Meredith, who was brother to the said Sir Thomas and sayeth that the said Sir Thomas sayeth further that that he knows this [the destruction of the tomb] would vex the said Mr. Eustace more than anything else he could do unto him'. Meredith knew that Eustace would be vexed not only at the destruction of his property, but also at the insult to his family and tothe position that they held in society. Anne MEREDITH and Sir William COLLEY were married. She died on 18 September 1608.2 She was buried in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.
Her Funeral Entry states:
"Anne dr. of Rich: Meredith sometime xx Bi: of Leighlin & wi: to Wm. eldest sonne of Sr. Geo: Colley of Edendery Knight, deceased in childe-bedde of her first childe born 18th[?] Septemb: 1603 . cc bur: in St. Patricks Dublin in herfathers tombe: the child (named William) alsoe died."

Margaret MEREDITH and Christopher CONWAY were married. She died on 7 January 1608/09.2 She was buried on 12 January 1608/09 in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.3
Her Funeral Entry states: "Margaret dr. of Richard Meredith sometime Byshoppe of Leghlin, & wife of Christopher Conway of Rathmines deceased in childbed of her firste childe the xxth. of Jan: 1608 & is bur: in St. Patricks Dublin in herfathers tombe: shee lefte issue a daughter."

Edward LOFTUS was born about 1598. He and Jane LINLEY were married in 1613.
In 1604 James I granted Middleham Castle to Sir Henry Linley, who made some repairs and lived in the castle until his death there in 1610. It was inherited by his daughter Jane and in 1613 Jane Linley married Edward, 2nd Viscount Loftus,who occupied it until 1644.

Biography

Sir William MEREDITH was born about 1620. He and Mary KING were married in 1655. He died about February 1664/65, at age ~45. He was buried on 14 February 1664/65 in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.2
Sir William Meredith was created Baronet of Greenhills in the County of Kildare on 20 Nov 1660. He was recorded as living at Greenhill, Co. Kildare, Ireland in 1659, and at Kilcullen, Co. Kildare, Ireland, in 1664. His will was dated 2 Jun 1664 and proven on 11 Apr 1665. It states:

" In the Name of God Amen The second day of June one thousand six hundred sixty and foure I William Meredith of the parish of Kilkullin in the County of Kildare in Ireland Barronett being Sicke in body but of perfect mind and memory doe make and declare this my Last Will and Testament in manner and forme following Imprimo I committ my body to the Grave and my soule into the handes of my Saviour Item I make and constitute my beloved wife Mary Meridith my sole heiress and executrix of all my personall estate goods and chattells In witness whereof I have by these presents putt my hand and seale the day and yeare above written. William Meredith. Sealed and delivered in the presence of us Marcus Trever Edward Lewis Jenkin Christopher[?] etc."

Biography

Sir Charles MEREDITH was born about 1628.1 He died in November 1700, at age ~72.
Sir Charles Meredith was knighted in Ireland on 4 Sep 1664. He was a Member of Parliament for Old Leighlin from 1661 to 1666, and for Gowran in 1692 and 1693. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer (Ireland) between 1674 and 1687, and again from 1693 to 1695. He was Revenue Commissioner from 1675 to 1677. He was appointed Privy Counsellor in Aug 1671. He was living in Hangman's Lane, St. Michan's Parish, Dublin, Ireland in 1659 and later lived at Greenhills, Co. Kildare, Ireland. He obtained 3,746 acres from the Commissioners of the Act of Settlement. In 19 Apr 1697 he was granted the custodiam of Oxmantown, Ireland for 31 years, the chapel being made available for worship by French Protestants. In his will dated 25 Mar 1694/95 (probated 18 Nov 1700) he was described as living in St Anne Parish, Soho, Middlesex, England.1,2,3,4

Biography

Alice MEREDITH was born before 1635. She and Charles COOTE, 2nd Earl of Mountrath, were married in 1653. She died before 1699.
As widow of Charles Coote, Alice Meredith she was attainted by James II's Parliament in 1689, and had her jointure of £950 a year sequestrated. On the intercession of Queen Mary in 1691 she was granted custody of an estate in the hands of the Crown until her own should be restored to her. She left a will in 1689.1
