Clodagh Forbes
M, #19362
Biography
- Note: There were numerous Forbes families in the townland of Clodagh, Dromdaleague parish, County Cork. C of I parish registers from 1802 to 1844 provide baptism records for many couples during that period. Some of these families emigrated to North America, probably beginning in the early 1820s, a time of political unrest in Southwest Cork. Prior to 1810 there are baptisms for the children of David, George, Richard and Thomas. In 1826 Richard is the only Forbes listed as holding any land in Clodagh. In the Griffiths Valuation we see that the landowner is "Reps. of Lady Carbery." Occupiers include David, George, John and Thomas Forbes. Richard had sons with all of these names. In 1901 and 1911 there were still Forbes living in Clodagh. One researcher of this family has posted a letter written in 1926 which claims the original Forbes man, presumably the father of the men found in Clodagh in 1810, had immigrated from Scotland. See:
That letter says
I have been struck by the limited number of names found in these families--it is even narrower than that typical of many families of that time.
For the purpose of this database, I am listing the fathers named in the various baptisms, sequenced according to date of the first known baptism of one of their children.

Thomas David Forbes
M, #19363, b. about 1784
Parents
Biography
- Note: Work by another researcher includes the following information on the family of Thomas David Forbes and his three brothers, David, George and Richard:
"Grandfather was born and brought up in Edinborough, Scotland. His father was a landowner, very well to do. Grandfathers name was Thomas, Richard was a layreader in the church of England. He stayed there. Grandfather that is Thomas David and George came over, David went to Montreal, settled there. George we cannot remember the name of the place he settled in, Granddad went across to Ireland, met and married grandmother Elizabeth Fuller. His father then disinherited him but got sorry and sent for him after he came over here to go back but grandmother had been so sick coming they did not think she could stand the trip back and she would not let grandad go without her. Dad was born in 1816. that they sailed from Cork the north of Ireland, one of Grandmothers brothers and one sister came on the same boat. they settled in Antigonish."
I was very surprized to see this claim that Thomas David and his brothers were born in Scotland. There have been Forbes in County Cork since the 1640s. I think at best, this letter writer has lost a generation. For example, she indicated Richard "stayed there." The Tithes Applotments records reveal that of the four men found in the baptism records for Clodagh from 1802 until 1812 (David, George, Richard and Thomas), only Richard remained in Clodagh in 1826. I feel quite confident that it was Ireland where Richard stayed, not Scotland, whereas his brothers had emigrated to North America before 1826. We know that George left in 1821 and settled in Mercer county, Pennsylvania.
There appear to have been at least two Thomas Forbes living in Clodagh between 1802 and 1815. One of those appears to have been Thomas David Forbes who was married to Elizabeth Fuller in 1804. Those records that list the father as Thomas Forbes, without naming the mother, are listed as if a separate family, but it is very likely that at least some of them were children of Thomas David. That family emigrated to Nova Scotia Canada, and can be found in the 1871 and later Canadian censuses in Colchester county, NS. They include David born about 1808, Richard born about 1813, George born about 1819 and John born about 1825. These are a reasonably good fit with the Clodagh baptism records for Thomas's children.

Richard Forbes
M, #19364, b. before 1785
Parents
Biography
- Note: There are numerous baptisms for children of Richard Forbes of Clodagh, Dromdaleague, ranging from 1805 to after 1844, the last year for which I have baptism records. I believe this Richard is the only one of four brothers who remained in Ireland. He would be the only Forbes who had land holdings subject to tithes assessments in 1826. Prior to 1820 some of the baptisms did not name the mother, but in the teens there were two different mothers named, indicating there must have been two different Richards; one wife was Catherine, the other Anne. In addition to these two Richards, there was also a child baptised whose father Richard lived in Drimoleague. So it looks as if we may have three Richards living near one another in the 18 teens.
For this Richard, I am only listing those whose mother is not named.
