Benjamin Armitage Ralph

  • Note: In 1881 Benjamin (37) and Mary Ann (26) Ralph lived in Launceston, Cornwall, England where Benjamin was "Principal of College of Teacher--L.L.B.". Their daughters Hilda and Morley were 3 and 1; both were born in Launceston.
    In 1891 they were in Bristol, Westbury, Gloucestershire, where Benjamin was "L.L.B. Head Master of [Craigmore] College" and the "Local Preacher."
    In 1901 Benjamin (57) and sons James (19), Benjamin (12), Bertram (11) are in Regent's Park, London. Benjamin is a Schoolmaster, Dr. of Laws. However, Mary is in Oxfordshire and is listed as head of a family consisting of herself and children Ida, Helen and John. Mary's occupation is "Writer. Author".
    Benjamin 65 and his son Armitage are next found in the 1906 Saskatchewan census. The 1911 Canada Census for Prince Albert, Saskatchewan: Benjamin Ralph, farmer, born October 1834, Ireland, immigrated 1903. The 1916 census shows Benjamin (72, wid) and Armitage (28, single) farming in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan. Here it says Benjamin arrived in 1904, Armitage in 1903.

Benjamin Ralph, B.A., M.A., Ph.D, LLD. . . . services were held in Dr. Ralph's home for the first 20 years. The name Craigmore originated from the College in Dublin [sic] of which he was headmaster. . . . Dr. Ralph remained in charge of Craigmore and a smaller area around it, until his passing in 1930, at the age of 87."

Also named on memorial at Chatham. HMS Goliath was providing artillery support to forces in Gallipoli when it was torpedoed by a Turkish destroyer and sank with the loss of 570 lives. (thx to AR)

    Ralph, Helen Douglas Guest [recte Gray] - (1892 - 1961) British educator Helen Ralph was born (July 31, 1892) at Bristol, and attended school in Nottingham prior to studying the classics at Westfield College at the University of London. She was appointed as the mistress of classics at The Mount School in York (1916 - 1919) and was then made the assistant mistress at St Paul’s School for Girls (1919 - 1928). Miss Ralph was then the headmistress of the Guildford High School (1929 - 1937) and was the secretary to the Society for the Equal Ministry of Men and Women in the church (1946 - 1947). She remained unmarried. Helen Ralph died (Sept 9, 1961) aged sixty-nine, at Long Crendon, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire.
