    Biographies: Robert Thomas Banting
    Author: Cookstown Women's Institute

Robert Thomas Banting, at the age of 19, came to this vicinity in the year 1845, with his father, the late Charles Banting, who settled on Lot 1, Concession 11 on Essa Township. This property remained in the Banting family until 1909, when the west half was sold to the late Wm. McMaster and the east half to the late Robert Ney.

R.T. Banting was the seventh son, and was born in Queen's County, Ireland, in the year 1826. In 1853, he married Miss Smyly, great-granddaughter of the late Hon. John Smyly, Senator for South Carolina. On his settlement here, he was connected with military matters and in 1858, was appointed Lt. Colonel of the 9th Battalian Militia Reserves. He became early identified with municipal matters, being the first auditor appointed for Essa Township. In 1857, he was appointed Clerk of Essa, and in 1860 as the Clerk of Simcoe County Council, holding both positions until his death in 1902. He was also, for fifteen years, Superintendent of Education, this position corresponding to our present day Inspectorate.

He was conservative in politics, and on several occasions, was offered the nominations for both provincial and dominion houses, but declined for personal reasons. However, for many years he acted as Secretary of the South Simcoe Conservative Association. He was a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist Church and served for years on the church board. He was one of the best informed men in the province on municipal affairs.

Lt. Colonel Banting died in 1902, leaving a family of five sons and two daughters, all of whom have now passed on. Mrs. Banting pre-deceased him some 12 years, having died in 1890. All five sons played in the Cookstown Band for many years and all were strong advocates of good music. A number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren are left to carry on the tradition of the Banting family.
