Thomas Bateman

Note: This man and his family are a bit of a mystery. John's death registration names his parents as Thomas Bateman, born England, and Mary Shannon, born New Brunswick. The informant was John's son-in-law, H. Rusk(?) Woods of Dalhousie.

It appears likely that the two marriages listed on the IGI, to Jane Ellis in 1830 and Catherine Merry/Murry in 1832 are for the same man. He must have lived in Gloucester county in 1851, as he does not turn up in the 1851 census, and Gloucester is missing. Catherine must have died before the 1861 census, when Thomas, aged 56, shoemaker, was living with John and Rebecca Kerr in New Bandon parish. I am told it was not unusual for shoemakers to travel about and stay with a family while working on their shoes, so his stay with the Kerrs may have been very brief. In 1870 Sarah Bateman, 70, wife of a Thomas Bateman of New Bandon, was buried in St. George's churchyard, Bathurst. In 1871 Thomas 65, and Mary 40 are living in New Bandon parish, but there are no children listed with them. In 1881 we find them in Dalhousie, Restigouche county: Thomas Bateman, 80, Anglican, shoemaker; wife Mary, 46, Catholic and son John, 12. In 1889 Mary was a widow.
We still have no documentation confirming that some or all of these records are for the same Thomas.
