James Hagertie

• Note: All we know of this man is that James Haggertie Sr., retired as clerk of Kilmeen Parish in 1766 at the age of 84 years. At that time James Jr.'s nomination letter indicated that the members of this family had served as clerks of Kilmeen and Ballymoney since the reign of King William (see notes for James Haggertie, born about 1682).
  Brady's "Clerical and Parochial Records of Cork, Cloyne and Ross" (1863, Vol II, p. 523-524, available online through Google books website) notes that in May 1700 it was reported that at Kilmeen: "There is a parish clerk at Kilmine; he does not get above 30s. out of this parish and Drinagh. The clerk teaches school. . . . 2s. for a marriage, and 1s. 6d, for a christening or burial, by the minister, and 6d for each of these offices by the Clerk and 12s. for publishing the banns, is usually received in these parts. And the clerk has usually 2d. a house at Xmas, and as much at Easter. Kilmine is worth to the Rector about 50 per annum.' [Downes' Tour.]." (Brady, 1864, pp. 523-524). Drinagh parish is immediately west of Kilmeen--I'm guessing that James was the parish clerk referred to in this excerpt, but cannot prove that.
