Richard Gorges was the Member of Irish Parliament for Charlemont 1692-3; Bandon Bridge 1703-13; Ratoath 1713-14, 1715-27. A professional soldier, he began service as Cornet in a Regiment of Horse 1685 followed bt: Adjutant General of Forces in Ireland 1697;Colonel of newly raised regment of foot 1703; Brigadier-General 1704; served under Peterborough in Spain; Major-General of the Forces in Spain 1707. General Gorges' income in 1713 estimated to be £7,200. He lived at Kilbrew House, Co. Meath, Ireland.
Note: The History of the Irish Parliament erroneously states that Richard Gorges’s second wife, Dorothy Stopford, was the mother of Richard, Lucy and Dorothy. Their dates of birth (actual or estimated from their subsequent marriage dates) clearly precede the date of marriage of Richard Gorges to Dorothy Stopford.
