Biography
James TESTAR was born about 1746.
1 He and
Hannah KEENE were married on 15 October 1772 in St Andrew by the Wardrobe, London.
2 He died in 1811, at age ~65. He was buried on 9 October 1811 in St. Mary, Islington.
2 James and Hannah Testar lived in Battle Bridge, Islington. James was the proprietor of the Maidenhead public house, an old inn that dated back to Elizabethan times.
His will dated 28 Feb 1811 was proved on 22 Oct 1811. It describes him as residing at the Maiden Head Public House, Battle Bridge, Islington, and mentions the following people:
- John Testar, son and executor
- Charles Testar, son and executor
- George Testar, son
- Margaret Testar, daughter
- James and Matilda Testar, grandchildren
- children of brother Thomas Testar of Birmingham
- John Andrews
In his will he bequeathed his business to his son George and Charles together with the lease of his house and its furniture, which he considered to be worth at least £2000. He left £3200 in 3 per cent consols to son John and daughter Margaret, of which 200 was to be transferred to grandchildren James and Matilda and 200 to be divided equally between children of his brother Thomas Testar of Birmingham. Debt of £250 owed by John Andrews was forgiven, and £500 owed by son John similarly.
His epitaph at St. Mary’s Islington reads:
BENEATH this sod, a mortal's mould'ring frame,
Sown in corruption, waits a nobler claim;
Till that illustrious morning shall arrive,
When all that sleep in dust, shall rise to live,
No more to die, but in eternal days,
To praise the wisdom of redeeming grace.

Each fleeting moment wafts thee to the tomb.
