Horatio Pettus Mackintosh Berney Ficklin was educated at Rugby and at Jesus College, Cambridge, matriculated in 1911; gazetted to the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment 9 June 1914, Lieutenant 5 March 1915, temporary Major 8th Battalion 1 July 1916; appointed Brigade-Major to 152nd Infantry Brigade in July 1917 ; serving in France from 1915 (awarded Military Cross 3 June 1916, and the Croix de Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in February 1917). In the last year of the war was taken prisoner. On his release he went to Russia as a liaison officer at G.H.Q. and was again wounded. He retired in 1926 but later returned to the service, transferred to The Highland Light Infantry, and in December 1936, was chosen to command the 2nd Battalion of the regiment. He was on active service in Palestine from 1936 to 1939 and served throughout the Second World War, being made C.B. in 1941 He was President of the Court at the Belsen trial in 1945.
