Crisp Brown was a well-known Norwich malster and merchant employed by Whitbread, London brewers. He was Alderman of Norwich, Sheriff 1814, Mayor 1817. He died at sea on board the packet “Lyra”. He has a Memorial Tablet in St Ethelred’s Church, Norwich.3,1

Crisp Brown was from Mendham, Suffolk.

His burial record names his parents, and also his maternal grandmother, which is very unusual. It reads as follows:

“Crisp, the son of John Brown & Sarah his wife (late Sarah Crisp, Spinster) was buried at Fishley June 16th 1812, aged 71 years”.1,3

Philip Berney Ficklin assumed the name and arms of Ficklin by Royal Licence dated 28 November 1888, under the will of his great-uncle, Thomas John Ficklin of Linton, co. Cambridge, J.P. and D.L. He was a J.P. for co. Norfolk 1896 and F.S.A. in January 1905; portrait at Tasburgh Hall.1

Horatio Pettus Mackintosh BERNEY-FICKLIN was born on 13 June 1892 in Henrietta Street, Cavendish Square, London. He and Audrey Brenda Knyvet WILSON were married on 9 July 1917 in St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich.1 He and Ileana BARTOLOMEI were married in 1936.2 He died on 17 February 1961, at age 68.
Horatio Pettus Mackintosh Berney Ficklin was educated at Rugby and at Jesus College, Cambridge, matriculated in 1911; gazetted to the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment 9 June 1914, Lieutenant 5 March 1915, temporary Major 8th Battalion 1 July 1916; appointed Brigade-Major to 152nd Infantry Brigade in July 1917 ; serving in France from 1915 (awarded Military Cross 3 June 1916, and the Croix de Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in February 1917). In the last year of the war was taken prisoner. On his release he went to Russia as a liaison officer at G.H.Q. and was again wounded. He retired in 1926 but later returned to the service, transferred to The Highland Light Infantry, and in December 1936, was chosen to command the 2nd Battalion of the regiment. He was on active service in Palestine from 1936 to 1939 and served throughout the Second World War, being made C.B. in 1941 He was President of the Court at the Belsen trial in 1945.1,3
