Ralph HEATON1
M, #1602, b. 1755, d. 14 July 1832
Biography
Ralph HEATON was born in 1755 in Birmingham.
2 He and
Mary ELSMORE were married on 1 March 1778 in Rugeley, Staffordshire.
3 He died on 14 July 1832, at age ~77, in Birmingham.
2 He was buried on 21 July 1832 in Birmingham, St. Paul’s.
4 Ralph Heaton (sometime referred to as Ralph Heaton I) was a Birmingham manufacturer and inventor. His place of business was in Slaney Street, where he had a considerable reputation as a manufacturer of rose-engines, and of the various tools used in the Birmingham trades. He was the inventor of a machine for drilling four holes at once in buttons, and in 1790 he developed a press for cutting out and punching the holes in button cards at one operation. His most famous invention though was the machine for making button shanks, the design of which he patented in 1794. In his book Birmingham Inventors and Inventions, Richard Prosser describes the machine as “of great interest as being probably the first example of a machine in which the material is subjected to a series of independent operations succeeding each other at regulated intervals of time.”
HIs will, dated 25 Jan 1830 and proved on 25 Aug 1832 at Lichfield Consistory Court, left much of his estate to his sons Ralph and George. It also mentions his other sons John, William and Reuben, as well as his daughter Charlotte and her natural daughter Charlotte, and Emma the daughter of his son Ralph.
His headstone in St. Paul’s churchyard reads:
“Sacred to the memory of Mary, wife of Ralph Heaton, who died Feb. the 13th 1816, Aged 61 years, and of the above named Ralph Heaton, who died July 14, 1832, Aged 77 years. He was the inventor of the Button Shank Engine and various other machines and for 40 years a very extensively known and useful engineer.”.
