Rowell’s New Brewery was founded in 1840 and located at 143 High Street, Gateshead. It became incorporated in 1894. In 1896 the firm took over Wm Turnbull & Co of South Shields, brewers, J M Bruce, wine and spirit merchants and Gilpin & Co, bottlers, wine merchants and mineral water bottlers. In 1901 the pubs of Matthew Taylor & Co were acquired when that firm stopped brewing, and in 1912 Rowell's gained a controlling interest in the Gateshead Breweries Corporation.
John Rowell and Son Ltd were taken over by Newcastle Breweries in 1959 and the firm was wound up in 1960.
