     It is possible that he is the John Barrer who is listed as a passenger on the ship Hurricane arriving in Victoria in Aug 1854 from Britain (age 22, which could be a transcription error for 32).⁴ He emigrated in 1853.¹ He was a Miner.¹ He was unmarried.¹ Although we have no record of his baptism, he is believed to belong to this family group, as no other family is known that matches the details on his death certificate of age, parents and place of birth. The fact that John Smith in Victoria is recorded as his nephew confirms that Frances was his sister.¹

Nothing more is known about these 3 children, who appeared not to have emigrated with Thomas and perhaps died young.⁷ He emigrated circa 1850 to USA; it is assumed that he emigrated at the same time as his sons Henry and Thomas.
