Frances Barrer emigrated from Ireland to Victoria, Australia in 1857. Although we have no record of her baptism, she is believed to belong to this family group, as no other family is known that matches the details on her death certificate of age and parents. Her marriage in Co. Limerick to Thomas Smith is also significant, but her recorded place of birth as Co. Cork needs further research and explanation. That Frances's brother was John Barrer is confirmed by his death certificate, which records John Smith as his nephew. Also significant is the fact that her Irish father-in-law (presumably from Co. Limerick) was John Smith - a person of that name was a witness at the marriage of her presumed brother George Barrer to Eliza Mee in 1848.^1,3

Moved to Knoxville 16 or 17 years ago, then to Peoria where lived number of years. Last fall returned to Knoxville. Married July 8, 1871 Elizabeth Duval of Wataga who with three sons survive him, Charles of Peoria, Edward in US Army, and stationed in Ohio, Clarence of Peoria. Lifelong member M. E. church and was sexton of Methodist church of Knoxville, member of Masons. He served in 90 days service civil war and afterwards joined GAR. Survived by brother, Thomas Barrer of this city, two half brothers, Robert Barrer of Victoria, Joseph Barrer of Mitchellville, Iowa.”.^3,4,5,6

Her disease was cancer of the tongue. Two weeks ago she left Oneida, where she had been living with a daughter, Mrs. John White, and went to Iowa. The journey weakened her and she steadily failed up to her death. The remains were brought here Sunday morning and the funeral held at the Catholic church. Father Haney of Galva conducted the service. The deceased was an old resident of this village, moving here about 35 years ago. Survivors, three children. Joseph of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mary White of Oneida, Thomas of Galesburg. All present at her funeral.

“DEATH OF MRS JOHN WHITE Mary A. Barrer was born in Baltimore Md., on October 18, 1852. She was the eldest daughter of Thomas and Nora Barrer, now deceased. When but a child her parents moved to Wataga, Ill., making that their home for a number of years. She was married to John White on July 1, 1875. To this union were born nine children, one dying in infancy and eight surviving, which are Mildred, Janie, Frank, John, Jr., Joseph, Ida, Mary and Isal. These, with the sorrowing husband, mourn her loss. Also four brothers Thomas Barrer, of Galesburg; Henry, of Peoria; Robert, of Victoria, and Joseph, of Mitchellville, Iowa. Early in the winter she suffered with a slight attack of la grippe, which settled into a complication of diseases, which caused her death. She seemed to be gaining in health and all hopes were entertained of her recovery until Sunday when she became gradually worse, dying on Tuesday, March 21, at 1:30 o'clock p.m. The funeral services were held at the residence in Oneida on Thursday, at 10 a.m., Rev. Mr. Graves officiating. The interment was in the Wataga cemetery. Thus another home is broken - mother is gone.”.^2,1

Several weeks ago taken ill with la grippe, but apparently he recovered but never regained his strength. Then in February taken seriously ill with peritonitis and day before death with pneumonia. Born in Baltimore, MD, June 11, 1857 and came to Illinois with his father 1860, settled in Wataga where remained until his majority. Married November 1, 1889 Fannie M. Arnold and after marriage resided on a farm near Victoria until five years ago when moved to Galesburg. Survived by wife, two children, Glen, Fern. A brother, Joseph of Mitchellville, Iowa, 1/2 brother, Thomas Barrer of Galesburg. The funeral service will be held at residence Monday. Rev Huget officiating. “.^2,3,4,5
