Frances BARRER was born circa 1811 in Co. Cork, Ireland.1 She married Thomas SMITH, son of John SMITH and Frances BISHOP, in 1827 in Co. Limerick, Ireland.1,2 She died on 25 October 1877 in Joel Joel, Stawell Shire, County Kara Kara, Victoria, Australia; Informant Anne Williams, daughter, of Joel Joel.1 She was buried on 27 October 1877 in Landsborough Cemetery, Victoria, Australia; The undertaker was Henry Lymer and Church of England Minister was Rev. James Stone. The witnesses were William Currie and James Kain.1
Frances Barrer emigrated from Ireland to Victoria, Australia in 1857. Although we have no record of her baptism, she is believed to belong to this family group, as no other family is known that matches the details on her death certificate of age and parents. Her marriage in Co. Limerick to Thomas Smith is also significant, but her recorded place of birth as Co. Cork needs further research and explanation. That Frances's brother was John Barrer is confirmed by his death certificate, which records John Smith as his nephew. Also significant is the fact that her Irish father-in-law (presumably from Co. Limerick) was John Smith - a person of that name was a witness at the marriage of her presumed brother George Barrer to Eliza Mee in 1848.1,3

John Barrer was unmarried. He emigrated from Ireland to Australia circa 1853 where he worked as a miner. It is possible that he is the John Barrer who is listed as a passenger on the ship Hurricane arriving in Victoria in Aug 1854 from Britain (age 22, which could be a transcription error for 32). Although we have no record of his baptism, he is believed to belong to this family group, as no other family is known that matches the details on his death certificate of age, parents and place of birth. The fact that John Smith inVictoria is recorded as his nephew confirms that Frances was his sister.1,2
