John Winter was a Farmer. He was resident in 1785 in Ballintubber This is possibly the present-day townland of Ballintober, about 3 miles due east of Kilfinnane. The annual rent was £16 (Irish) or £14-15-4½ (British) payable half-yearly in May and November.4

Nothing is known of John Winter's place of birth or early years. One family tradition is that the Winters family was from Scandinavia, although it is unclear on what this is based. There is no evidence to indicate that John Winter arrived on the Oliver estate as part the Palatine settlement that took place from 1759 onwards; the surname does not appear to be present in the lists of original Palatine settlers who settled in West Limerick following the exodus from the German Palatinate in 1709. It is a Germanic surname, however, and indeed a John Winter appears in a ship's list of Palatine emigrants from Amsterdam via Dover to Pennsylvania in 1737). 5,6
