Samuel Meredith is first recorded in January 1826 as residing in Clonegown, Clonenagh Parish, Co. Laois, Ireland, at the time of his marriage.5 He was a Farmer. He is believed to have lived in Ballyduff, Moyanna Parish, Co. Laois, Ireland, between 1830 and 1877. 6 He was recorded in the Tithe Applotment Book of 1830 in Ballyduff where he was the landholder of 47 acres, plantation measure (approximately 76 English acres), which had a tithe set at £1-1-9.7,8 In the Tithe records of 1830, Samuel Meredith was named as J. Saml. Meredith.7 He was recorded in a valuation survey of 1842 in Ballyduff with a landholding of just over 80 acres.9 He was mentioned again in a valuation survey of 1844 in Ballyduff.10 He witnessed the marriage of his daughter Anne Meredith and James Wilkinson on 25 May 1848 in Stradbally Church.11 He was recorded in the Griffith's Valuation of 1850 in Ballyduff where he had a house, offices and land of just over 77 acres leased from the Earl of Portarlington with a net annual value of £44.12 He was also recorded in the Griffith's Valuation of 1850 in Kilmurry, Kilteale Parish, where he leased 15 acres from the Earl of Portarlington having a net annual value of £11.13 He witnessed the marriage of his daughter Eliza Meredith and Edward Wilkinson on 20 November 1854 in Stradbally Church.14 He was present at the death of his wife Elizabeth on 13 July 1873 in Ballyduff.15 He moved away from Ballyduff in 1877, the lease of Ballyduff farm passing to his son Henry Meredith. At that time it comprised two plots of just over 77 acres and 6 acres, with a rateable annual valuation of £42-10s.16
Research Note (October 2006): Children's baptisms between 1826 and 1836 were recorded in either Parish Registers of Ballyfin (Thomas, Henry, Eliza, George, Joseph) or Maryborough (Anne, Maria) at the time Samuel believed to have been at Ballyduff. Any significance?
