James Armstrong Meredith was recorded on the census of 13 April 1901 in the household of Thomas Meredith in Ballyduff, and was described as James Meredith, son, Irish Church, read & write, aged 12, a scholar, not married, born in Queen's Co.

He was recorded on the census of 1 May 1911 in the household of Thomas Meredith in Ballycullane, Co. Kildare, and was described as James Meredith, son, Church of Ireland, able to read & write, aged 22, a farmer's son, single, born in Queen's Co.

He was resident in Ballycullane in July 1915, when he was the informant of his father Thomas’s death. According to the Valuation Office records, the responsibility for the farm at Ballycullane passed from his mother Rebecca to James in 1920. By this time the farm was owned rather than leased. The records indicate a change of occupier of the Ballycullane farm from James to Mary E. Meredith [his wife]. Unfortunately the date is unclear but it looks like 1936.

James Armstrong and Mary Meredith were living at Killinure House, Tullow in 1945.2,3,4,5,6

Samuel MEREDITH

Male, #28, b. circa 1804, d. 29 February 1896

Samuel Meredith (ca.1804-1896)
Samuel MEREDITH was born circa 1804.1 He married Elizabeth WILKINSON, daughter of Edward WILKINSON and Elizabeth (-), on 31 January 1826 in Coolbanagher, Co. Laois, Ireland.2 He died on 29 February 1896 in Mountbrook, Ballylinan, Co. Laois, Ireland.3 He was buried on 2 March 1896 in St Peter's Church, Maryborough, Co. Laois.4

Samuel Meredith was a Farmer. He was residing at Clonegown, Clonenagh Parish, Co. Laois at the time of his marriage in January 1826. He is believed to have lived at Ballyduff, Moyanna Parish, Co. Laois from 1830 to 1877.

He was recorded in the Tithe Applotment Book of 1830 at Ballyduff as J. Saml. Meredith, a tenant with a landholding of 47 acres, plantation measure (approximately 76 English acres), the tithe being set at £1-1-9. He was recorded in a valuation survey of Ballyduff in 1842 with a landholding of just over 80 acres. He was mentioned again in a valuation survey of 1844 at Ballyduff.

He witnessed the marriage of his daughter Anne Meredith and James Wilkinson on 25 May 1848 in Stradbally Church. He was recorded in the Griffith's Valuation of 1850 at Ballyduff, where he had a house, offices and land of just over 77 acres leased from the Earl of Portarlington with a net annual value of £44. He was also recorded in the 1850 Valuation of Kilmurry, Kilteale Parish, where he leased 15 acres from the Earl of Portarlington having a net annual value of £11.

He witnessed the marriage of his daughter Eliza Meredith and Edward Wilkinson on 20 November 1854 in Stradbally Church. He was present at the death of his wife Elizabeth on 13 July 1873 in Ballyduff. He moved away from Ballyduff in 1877, the lease of the Ballyduff farm passing to his son Henry Meredith. At that time it comprised two plots of just over 77 acres and 6 acres, with a rateable annual valuation of £42-10s. He died in 1896 at the age of 92 in the house of his son George at Monebrock, Ballylinan (also known as Mountbrook).

Research Note: his children's baptisms between 1826 and 1836 were recorded in the Parish Registers of Ballyfin (Thomas, Henry, Eliza, George, Joseph) and Maryborough (Anne, Maria), including the time that Samuel believed to have been at Ballyduff. Is there any significance in this?5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13
