Parents

FatherIsaac Hunting SACKETT b. 28 November 1810, d. after 1865
MotherAnn HARDING b. about 1823

Biography

Smith T. SACKETT was born about 1856 in New York State, USAG.1 He married Catherine F. before 1880. He married Mary Jane WINTERS, daughter of Robert WINTERS and Ellen LEE, in 1896.1 Smith T. SACKETT died on 3 January 1912, at age ~56, in Stanford, Dutchess County, USAG.3
He was enumerated in the 1880 USA census in the household of Artemus E. and Laura H. Sackett in Washington, Dutchess County, and described as a nephew aged 23, together with his wife Kate Sackett aged 21.

He was enumerated in the 1892 New York State census at Washington, Dutchess County, aged 34, a Farmer, together with Katie Sackett aged 34.

He was recorded on the census of 13 June 1900 in Stanford, Dutchess County, New York State, USA, and was described as "Smith Sackett, head of household, a white male aged 36, married for 4 years, born June 1863 in New York State to parents born same State, a Farm Labourer, no months unemployed, can read & write, living in a rented house". He was enumerated with Mary J (wife, aged 38), William S (son, aged 4), Henry H (son, aged 1) and Benjamin J (son, aged 5 mths).

He was recorded on the census of 27 April 1910 and was described as "Smith T. Sackett, Head, white male aged 50, married twice, 15 years in present marriage, born New York State to parents also b. NY State, working as a Farm Labourer and employee on Dairy Farm, 5 weeks unemployed during 1909, can read & write, living in rented house". He was enumerated with Mary (wife, aged 40). William (son, aged14), Henry H (son, aged 12) and Benjamin J (son, aged 10).

His wife Mary J. Sackett was enumerated as the head of the household in the 1915 New York census, and it is assumed that Smith Sackett died between 1910 and 1915. His son William's draft registration in 1917 mentioned his "widowed mother".

It is unclear why the newspaper report of his wife's death described her as the widow of "George Smith Sackett".

Smith T. Sackett is described In the 1910 US census as being twice married, and it is likely that his first wife is the Catherine F. whose death was reported in 1893. This is consistent with the enumeration of Smith T. Sackett and Katie Sackett, both aged 34, in the New York State census of 1892; they were living in Washington Township, Dutchess County. Smith T. Sackett (aged 23) and his wife Kate Sackett (aged 21) were enumerated at the same place in the 1880 US census. They were in the household of Artemus E. Sackett (aged 80) and Smith T. Sackett was described as the nephew of Artemus and having an Irish-born mother.

Note: a Smith J. Sackett (1844-1919) lived in the same area, and was the son of Leonard Sackett and Ruth Gildersleeve.1,4,5,6
