He married Sarah Batho before 1584.1,9 Richard Meredith, Bishop of Leighlin was appointed Chaplain to the lord deputy of Ireland, Sir John Perrot in 1584 , and moved to Dublin.1 He was appointed Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland, in June 1584.1,6 He was described in July 1588 as being noted for 'diligent preaching' and keeping 'a good house to the relief of many people which likeness was not done this 30 years by his predecessors' in July 1588.1 He was appointed Bishop of Leighlin in April 1589.1 He appeared before the Star Chamber in May 1592 and was fined £2000.1 He was described as being in poor health and 'not like to live' in 1593.1 He appeared before Dublin court of castle chamber in January 1593/94, and was fined £20 with a sentence of eight days in prison.1 He left a will dated 28 July 1597; £100 to Dublin corporation; allowance to poor; £800 due to estate from Archbishop Loftus and sons & bequeathed to his daughters provided they remained chaste until marriage, estate in Pembrokeshire to youngest son.10,11 He died on 3 August 1597.1,12 He was buried on 7 August 1597 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland.13 His will was proven in 1606 at St Asaph's Consistory Court.14

Richard Meredith was born between 1657 and 1667.4,5,6 He entered Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, on 5 June 1685.7 He entered Middle Temple on 1 February 1687/88.8 On 17 February 1689 he made an allegation at St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex, for a marriage licence between Robert, Lord Baron of Kingston in Ireland, bachelor aged about 30, and Margaret Harbord of St. Martin's in the Fields, Middlesex, spinster aged about 22, with her father's consent. He was described as a Gentleman of that parish.9 On 19 February 1689 he was party to the deed of settlement in respect of the proposed marriage of Robert Lord Kingston to Margaret Harbord, daughter of William Harbord of Grafton Park.10 He was Member of Parliament for Athy between 1703 and 1713. He married Sarah Paul, daughter of Jeffery Paul and Deborah Vincent, on 1 January 1702/3.11,12 He was Sheriff of County Kildare in 1726. He died in 1743. He was buried on 8 October 1743.
Various pedigrees in circulation assert that Richard was the son of the Sir William Meredith Bart who married Mary King, and that Richard is therefore the 2nd Bart. and that the succession continued down to Edward Newenham Meredith as 9th Bart. However it is clear from several sources that Sir William Meredith died childless and the baronetcy became extinct then. In his will Sir William makes his wife Mary his sole heiress and executrix.

Robert Meredith was born between 1517 and 1523 at Llanfair Talhaearn, Denbighshire, Wales; now in the Welsh Unitary Authority of Conwy and called Llanfair Talhaiarn on the Ordnance Survey maps.1 He was apprenticed as a Clothworker in London to Davy Price between 1537 and 1538.3 He married Margaret ferch William ap John, daughter of William ap John Of and Elsbeth ferch Harry Hen Conwy. He lived in 1557 at Aldermary, London, England. He was a Clothworker and citizen of London in 1557. He died in 1557 at London, England.2 He left a will dated 24 January 1557. His will was proven on 29 March 1557; London, England.2
The story that we can piece together from Robert Meredith's Will, Bartrum’s Welsh Genealogies, and correspondence with the Clothworkers’ Company is as follows:
Robert Meredith was born between 1517 and 1523, one of at least two sons of Maredudd ap Gronwy ap Deio and his wife Elsbeth ferch John ap Edward. His place of birth was Llanfair Talhaearn in Denbighshire (now in the Welsh Unitary Authority of Conwy and called Llanfair Talhaiarn on the Ordnance Survey maps). In about 1537-8 he became apprenticed as a clothworker to a Davy Price in London. The account books of the Clothworkers’ Company show that he completed his apprenticeship between August 1544 and July 1545 and was ‘made Free’. He would have been at least 21 years old then, but no older than 27: the apprenticeship normally started at age 14-20 and lasted 7 years.
It is unlikely that he would have been married before being made Free, and so his probable date of marriage to Marged ferch William ap John was between 1545 and 1548, taking into account the estimated date of birth of 1550 of his 2nd son Richard, the future Bishop of Leighlin. Robert married into an interesting family, one of his brothers-in-law being George Smith the Chancellor of St. Asaph (i.e. private secretary to the Bishop of St. Asaph). The other brother-in-law was a colourful character called Roger Smyth, a Roman Catholic priest and Welsh translator who fled to the Continent ca. 1573 and spent much of his time there. Roger Smyth was described as “a man of uncommon opinions who disliked both the Jesuits and the English, and desired to see a republic, together with freedom of conscience, instituted in Wales and England”. Robert Meredith’s two sons John and Richard seemed to have been born ca. 1550.
Sometime between 1544 and 1551 he was the plaintiff in a case, considered by the Court of Chancery, against a first cousin Griffith ap Howell regarding lands in Llanfair inherited from their grandfather Gronwy ap Deio. The details of the case show that his uncle, Howell ap Gronwy ap Deio, was an elder brother of his father Maredudd.
Robert Meredith’s Will is dated 24th January 1556/7 and describes him as Citizen and Clothworker of London living in the parish of Aldermary. The Will names his wife as Margaret, mother as Elizabeth (and therefore still living in 1557), and two sons John and Richard. He leaves his property in Denbighshire to his mother Elizabeth for the rest of her life, and thereafter to his son John and his heirs, and for lack of heirs to his son Richard and his heirs (so we can assume that John was the elder son). The Will also names a brother David (but note that the term can be used loosely in Wills of the time). The Will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 29 March 1557, so Robert must have died sometime between 24 January and 29 March of that year.
It is possible that his widow is the “Margarett Meridith” that the IGI shows as having married a “Reighnold Sainct” (probably Reginald Saint) on 4 Feb 1559 at Saint Thomas the Apostle, London (which is a parish near to Aldermary).
