James Barry entered Trinity College Dublin on 10 July 1678. He was MP for Naas 1695-9, 1711-13; Kildare B. 1715-25; Joint Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas 1701; Sheriff of Co. Kildare 1694; Sovereign of Naas 1708.2 He was caught in the South Sea Bubble disaster, and a letter in 1720 notes: "He is now obliged to sell all he has in the world ... his house in Capel Street is going with the rest."
According to a History of Bunclody, James Barry of Naas became the new owner of the Bunclody estate in 1719. He renamed it Newtown-Barry, the "Newtown" deriving from his wife's birthplace, Newtown, Co Meath and "Barry" to perpetuate his own family name. He gave the estate to his daughter Judith on her marriage to John Maxwell a Colonel in the Cavan Militia and a native of that county. The Maxwell-Barry families occupied and ran the estate for over 120 years and were primarily responsible for the development of the town and the estate. [The town was officially called Newtownbarry until about 1960, although unofficially called Bunclody before then].4,5
