Many of us with ancestors in the Royal Irish Constabulary are interested in finding their entries in the 1901 and 1911 censuses, but this is not straightforward:
- RIC members are often identified by their initials only
- while the county in which they were serving may be known, the location of their barracks in 1911 may not be
- it is not possible to search for RIC barracks in the online census
The aim of this website is to provide a finding aid by collecting together the summary of RIC members who were serving in various barracks across Ireland on the census dates. Although the summary is incomplete at the moment, and limited to 1911 only, it is hoped that it will be useful nevertheless.
The census entries for the barracks are organised by counties, and can be accessed via the menu bar items 1911 Map (which displays a clickable map of the counties) and 1911 List (which displays a list of counties).
Most of the census returns identified the occupants of the RIC barracks by their initials only. However, some returns gave their full names and occasionally the names of family members. Click on the menu bar item 1911 Surnames for a list of these full names and the associated census returns for the barracks.
Newspapers can also be a useful resource for locating the whereabouts of an RIC member in years for which there was no census. Click on the menu bar item Newspaper Extracts to see a selection for named RIC members; some extracts of more general relevance to the RIC are also included.
