Biography

John TURNER died about 1788 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.2
John Turner was a Bucklemaker. He was listed in a Birmingham directory ca. 1774 trading at 24 Great Charles Street in Birmingham, from which street address he had registered a silver hallmark on 20 October 1773. An earlier reference is of a lease for 180 years of land in Edmund Street from Charles Colmore of Bloomsbury London, esq., to John Turner of Birmingham, buckle maker, dated 1 May 1759. An article by Arthur Westwood in the Transactions of the Birmingham and Warwickshire Archaeological Society gives the following description:

“John Turner, senior, who was of No. 24, Great Charles Street, in 1770, and is registered at the assay office as of the same address in 1773. He was in a considerable way of business as a maker of small silver wares, such as snuffboxes, clasps, seals, and buckles of various kinds. In 1779 he was joined by Matthew Linwood (a connection of what degree I am ignorant), of the Miss Linwood, who was celebrated for her artistic needlework, specimens of which are in the South Kensington Museum. He was one of the thirty guardians named in the Assay Act of I773, and on retiring from business about the year 1781, he was appointed a warden, in which office he served a term of one year.”

John Turner made his Will on 21 Sep 1782, witnessed by Thomas Lee, Thomas Cottrell and Richard Bellison. The Will mentions the following people:
- Hannah (daughter, wife of Matthew Linwood of Leicester)
- Matthew Linwood (eldest son of Hannah and Matthew Linwood)
- Francis Parrott, William Turner, John Horton (nephews)
- Elias Wallen, Joseph Townshend, John Grew the Younger (nephews)
- Sally (daughter, wife of John Meredith of Birmingham)

It states that the following settlements had already been made:
- £800 at different times to Hannah
- the freehold for 4 houses in Birmingham with a yearly rent of £34 and a value of £600 to Hannah and Matthew Linwood, and their eldest son Matthew Linwood and his issue
- £700 to Sally Meredith

It makes the following bequests:
- £300 to children of Hannah and Matthew Linwood (except eldest child Matthew already provided for)
- interest on £500 currently loaned to grandson Matthew Linwood to be paid to Hannah
- rent from all his leasehold properties (on houses in Great Charles Street, Edmund Street, New Hall Street, Little Charles Street in Birmingham) to be paid to Sally Meredith for her sole use without the control of her husband and then to be held in trust for her children and grandchildren
- residue of money and personal estate to be divided equally and held in trust for Hannah and Sally to receive interest
- a Mourning Ring to each of the Executors

The Executors were his nephews Francis Parrott, William Turner, John Horton (acting as Trustees for Hannah Linwood), Elias Wallen, Joseph Townshend, and John Grew the Younger (acting as Trustees for Sally Meredith). Probate was granted on 18 June 1788 at Lichfield Consistory Court.3,4,5,6
